RE: Fw: [suse-linux-uk-schools] Typical uses of IT in schools
Hi all, Thanks for the feedback. what I am interested in knowing is the typical uses of IT that a school has. When I say custom software I think I was a little too unspecific - what I was trying to get at was is there any software which is used for non productivity work which is only available on one OS or varient of the OS. I am interested in learning how much schools are 'locked in' to an OS due to the inavailability of the software for an alternative OS. I am also interested to see if this non-productivity software (ie educational software) is actually used and what proportion of use compared to productivity tools. Jono
Hi all,
Thanks for the feedback.
what I am interested in knowing is the typical uses of IT that a school has. When I say custom software I think I was a little too unspecific - what I was trying to get at was is there any software which is used for non productivity work which is only available on one OS or varient of the OS.
Using the terminology "productivity work" is rather less than helpful. Since quite a few pieces of custome (and very OS specific) software produce quite a bit of output. (e.g. most of the stuff from TechSoft.)
I am interested in learning how much schools are 'locked in' to an OS due to the inavailability of the software for an alternative OS.
There are also issues related to file formats. MS Publisher and Access being amongst the most obvious. You might also like to check out Bett 2002.
I am also interested to see if this non-productivity software (ie educational software) is actually used and what proportion of use compared to productivity tools.
Proportion of use is not always a good yardstick. Because of the politics involved with such things as cross curriculum IT. -- Mark Evans St. Peter's CofE High School Phone: +44 1392 204764 X109 Fax: +44 1392 204763
