Re: [suse-linux-uk-schools] Help on cabling for network topology
RUnnning SAMBA I have everything configured apart from the fact that the shares do not show up in network neighbourhood on the workstations. I can mount the sahres using 'net use' etc. Ant ideas?
There is a flag to mark shares 'non-browsable' - if everything else is fine - then sounds like this is on. I think it is : browseable = yes but you will need to RTFM (sorry roger ;-) to check, as I don't have a system in front of me right now ... (man smb.conf should list the configuration options - search for browse). Kevin.
Why use network neighbourhood to find the shares - go into file manager on the windows stations and create a permanent connection to the homes share under samba (Tools, Map Network drive, specify drive letter and connection path, tick reconnect at logon) - works ok for us with some 600 year 7,8,9 pupils - they don't even need to know the name of thier folder on the samba system as it's covered by the homes share. If your going to run with CAT5 UTP then do the lot with it. I use a similar topology to what your proposing but with 100 Mbps switches at the core, going down to 10/100 switches and then either to individual systems at 10 or 100 mbps depending upon their situation with 10 mbps hubs for large classroom setups. I don't need to use crossover cables from my hubs to the individual workstations. If you need any further info let me know (either on or off list) and I'll see if I can help. kevin.taylor@powerconv.alstom.com wrote:
