I dunno why this isn't working on this 'ere fresh installation of suse 9.0. I've never had a problem with this before and don't have a clue what the error messages in K3b are trying to tell me. It's just worked out of the box with other computers ... The setup is a DVD and a LG burner. K3b faults out on an attempted copy of the SUSE 9.0 CD (I installed from DVD but need a CD install on a pc for my daughter, and of course the suse cd won't read on her cd won't it, so I am trying to copy from a CD reader that actually reads the disk, and if can't get to burn can't install her nor help out Simon who needs a cd copy to replace a duff disc he's got in his set...). The error messages are these: No cdrdao driver found Please select one manually in the device settings For most generic drives this would be "generic-mmc" Cancelled (surprise surprise) all current files removed. Well, when I go to the configure K3b menu option it shows these devices: Reader: Memorex DVD etc. Writer HL-DT-ST CDRW GCE-852... (whatever is behind the dots I can't seem to get expanded to read). Nowhere can I find anything remotely like generic-mmc, nor can I find anywhere to write this in. Whatever the hell generic MMC is ...! I'm stuck. What am I looking for?

How k3b manages to even load, is a mere miracle.
No cdrdao driver found
Well, there's a clue. Do you have cdrdao installed?

It's more a question of what I'm looking for. What is the output of the command: "uname -r". Indeed, if it is a 2.6 kernel, then cdrecording is iffy unless it is of a certain version. The other option is permissions, but I haven't enough information to support that. -- Thomas Adam ===== "The Linux Weekend Mechanic" -- http://linuxgazette.net "TAG Editor" -- http://linuxgazette.net "<shrug> We'll just save up your sins, Thomas, and punish you for all of them at once when you get better. I've never gone to a 2.6 kernel, so its still on (I think I did an online update a few days back on this PC) a 2.4 series. So running the command above: 2.4.21-243-athlon Indeed, if it is a 2.6 kernel, then cdrecording is
iffy unless it is of a certain version.
Oh, joy yet to come.
The other option is permissions, but I haven't enough information to support that.
How would I find those out?

Why do you say that?
No cdrdao driver found

(Is this cd disk at once? It just struck me what the dao bit might mean.) As for it being installed - I've no idea - if suse install didn't load it, I certainly didn't. Go back to basics - what do I check to see if this is there? And what, exactly, is cdrdao? A "driver", a program which meshes with K3b and other burners...?

You'll need to cue me in on ferreting out the required information... Think neonate in any technical level for this OS. I've been looking after kids the last few years and so get about an hour a day free from domestics for everything else, hence despite using suse "out of the box" for some years haven't been able to look under the hood or get acquainted with anything beyond the simple "user" needs it meets (unlike my nigh on 2 decade long professional involvement, before "retiring" with a /very/ late family start, with the evolution of microsoft and novell products - time I rue as lost bitterly). I'm not in too good a position to advocate stuff around the school I'm a governor of if I can't answer such simple questions!!
