[opensuse-edu] Desktop wiki page refactoring
Hi! 1. Current status of development: http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Applications/Desktop_Temp 2. The list of dropped packages in comparison with old page (why?): bc (Math) calctool (Math) fraqtive (Math) dosbox (Emulator) dosemu (Emulator) quanta (WebDevelopment) enigma (LogicGame) kmahjongg (LogicGame) kmines (LogicGame) kpat (LogicGame) kreversi (LogicGame) lincity-ng (Simulation) anagramarama (Languages) rekall (DBMS) kile (Publishing) scribus (Publishing) audacity (AudioVideoEditing) FreqTweak (AudioVideoEditing) Stopmotion (AudioVideoEditing) dia (FlowChart) xFig (FlowChart) kolorpaint (2DGraphics) GIMP (2DGraphics) Inkscape (2DGraphics) Skencil (2DGraphics) blender (3DGraphics) GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) TaskJuggler (project management tool) PythonCAD (Engineering) 3. The list of packages to define their categories in new page: KLogic iTalc kiosktool kde-kids-theme sabayon childplay eXelearning gcompris GRAMPS KDissert KSociograma vym semantik Feel free to define (redefine) categories and to add missing packages. Any comments about new wiki page concept are welcome. 1. Program name is the same as package name 2. Level one categories are from RPM GROUPS (for easy installing) 3. Level two categories are from http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/menu-spec-latest.html (for easy and consistent browsing and finding installed application) Also, good icons representing ages are needed to support visual age differentiation. And the last, should wiki page include educational-related software from the official repo and if so, how to differ them? Hi Kirill
First: big thanks for your work! The new layout looks much clearer and
better now!

2. The list of dropped packages in comparison with old page (why?): bc (Math)
in the distro
calctool (Math)
in the distro
fraqtive (Math)
hm: need to be checked
dosbox (Emulator) dosemu (Emulator)
both in the distro
quanta (WebDevelopment)
renamed
enigma (LogicGame) kmahjongg (LogicGame) kmines (LogicGame) kpat (LogicGame) kreversi (LogicGame)
needs to be checked
lincity-ng (Simulation)
maintained in the games repository, but should end up in our add-on repo/media.
anagramarama (Languages)
broken since 10.3 - and obsoleted at least by khangman
rekall (DBMS) kile (Publishing) scribus (Publishing) audacity (AudioVideoEditing) FreqTweak (AudioVideoEditing)
in the distro
Stopmotion (AudioVideoEditing)
needs to be checked
dia (FlowChart) xFig (FlowChart) kolorpaint (2DGraphics) GIMP (2DGraphics) Inkscape (2DGraphics) Skencil (2DGraphics) blender (3DGraphics)
in the distro
GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System)
in the geograhy repository - but has many dependencies which just can be fullfilled with including nearly all packages from this repository. Needs to be rechecked.
TaskJuggler (project management tool) PythonCAD (Engineering)
in the distro Note: packages which are already in the distribution (and even if they are just available via FTP) are not longer linked/aggregated into the Education buildservice repository - as this will increase the needed space and cost of build power without real benefits. BUT: + the packages should be listed as they are really useful + packages missing on the official download DVDs (and therefore just available via FTP) should end on our add-on media to avoid that people need an online connection to install our recommended software. That's already the case for our 11.0 (and if I'm correct even 10.3) add-on.
3. The list of packages to define their categories in new page: KLogic
"Electronic" ?
iTalc kiosktool kde-kids-theme sabayon
"System or System-Management" ?
childplay
"General Learning"
eXelearning
HTML-Editors or Web-Publishing
gcompris
"General Learning"
GRAMPS
Hu? ;-)
KDissert KSociograma vym semantik
"Mind regulators" ;-) KDissert, semantik and vym are Mind Mapping Tools, Ksociograma is a tool for social networking. Perhaps the first three fit more into the "Office" Category? The last one...??? Psychology?
Any comments about new wiki page concept are welcome. 1. Program name is the same as package name 2. Level one categories are from RPM GROUPS (for easy installing) 3. On my way... ...if krish isn't faster ;-)

Yes, it should include it. And we should take care, that these packages are also listed in our patterns. Perhaps we can add the official openSUSE logo behind packages, which are already in the official repository? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-edu+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-edu+help@opensuse.org
Wonderful work, totally impressed with the layout. Lars Vogdt wrote:

Hi all. New version is ready, please, check: http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Applications/Desktop_Temp New features: 1. Homepage link was added, since majority of packages don't have separate wiki page 2. number of the most powerful software from official repo was added with suse-logo icon 3. switched to wiki patterns for easy customising and adding new entries 4. icon for java programs TODO: 1. age support (icons are needed, imho, we should support only three categories, baby, youth and senior) 2. cover 100% of EDU repo software (please, check) 3. add important EDU related software from official repo (please, advise) Kirill <>< -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-edu+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-edu+help@opensuse.org
Kirill I really like the work you have here. I saw one package that just had the opensuse icon, does that mean it is desktop version independant? JT Kirill Kirillov wrote:

Hi Kirill
On So 23 Nov 2008 23:38:41 CET Kirill Kirillov
TODO: 1. age support (icons are needed, imho, we should support only three categories, baby, youth and senior)
I've done a simple set of images now to distinguish the recommended age groups. The images are just a simple circle with different colors and the "starting" age in it. That's because they would become to large if I add more... I've taken the images on http://www.spio.de/index.asp?SeitID=420 as samples - the "FSK"[1] is a German motion picture rating system organisation. Their Rating-Logos are well known here in Germany (the Logos are on each back cover of DVDs, VHS Cassettes and even PC-Software). So I think we should use at least their colors to show the recommended age: white => no age restriction yellow => up from 6 years green => up from 12 years blue => up from 16 years red => up from 18 years I've already enhanced the http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Applications/Desktop page with the additional images - I hope that's ok.
2. cover 100% of EDU repo software (please, check) 3. add important EDU related software from official repo (please, advise)
^^still to be done :-( With kind regards, Lars [1]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freiwillige_Selbstkontrolle_der_Filmwirtschaft -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-edu+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-edu+help@opensuse.org
