We already have Redhat, Suse, Debian, ad naus distros. These differ greatly in the way apps are packaged, e.g. file locations or initial configurations.
If this troubles you,
No it doesn't trouble me - I was implying that concerns over Linux heading 'the same way as Unix' are not that urgent - we do seem to be able to stumble along despite the apparent fragmentation, because either you download a package from the correct distribution, or you roll your own from the source. With Unix, most but not all distributions were purchased, there were binary incompatibilities between executables, and generally source wasn't available. Then there was copyright. In Linux we have the GPL or to keep us honest :-) At the moment differences between Linux distributions are an inconvenience, not a problem for the experienced user but a barrier for the relative novice who doesn't understand why a Redhat rpm won't always install cleanly on a Suse box. No different from a Windows installation which fails to account for different OS platforms. All of which, IMO, implies the conjoining of Novell and Suse will open up server platforms in business rather than desktops at home. Novell adds enough weight to tip the scales in business. I wonder how quickly Parity and other trainers will offer Linux courses? Oh, they already do: Linux Systems Administrator, 4 days for £1195 ! I wouldn't be surprised if Novell create a certifiable Linux course structure real soon. With all that in place you can really start tweaking your network manager's beard! -- ******************************************************************************** All mail sent and received may be examined to prevent transmission of unacceptable material.
