The Digital Divide is widening both in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, aided and abetted by the costs, supportability and sustainability of the current commercial software business models.
Are there alternatives?
The debate on 'Open Source' and 'Licence free' free software is quickening - Richard Stallman believes that free software is the alternative and has been instrumental in it's creation and nurturing the debate over the last decade - see below..

IMFUNDO 'ICT in EDUCATION' TALK SERIES

Imfundo and the Internet Learning Trust are pleased to invite you to a talk by Richard Stallman

Title: Free Software in Education: freedom to learn,
learning the value of freedom.

Time: Friday, 7 June, 9.30-11.30 AM

Venue:
Main Conference Room 3W11,
Department for International Development, One Palace Street
LONDON, SW1E5HE
Directions: http://www.imfundo.org/contact/contact1.htm

Summary: A talk by Richard Stallman, Creator of the GNU system (GNU's Not Unix,
http://www.gnu.org/) and the GNU General Public License (GPL
http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html), and founder of the Free
Software Foundation (
http://www.gnu.org/fsf/fsf.html).

The GNU operating system, together with the kernel, Linux, are
responsible for a worldwide surge in non-proprietary, free software.
Reaching maturity in the North, where free software is
challenging user-restricting (and expensive) proprietary platforms,
these developments hold enormous promise for the South.
