For future developments, where you are up against MS Exchange/Outlook, there are two cards to bring into play. It is a fact that the majority of viruses currently in the wild affect MS Outlook, and that this likely to continue to be true. Second, if they want an integrated personal organiser/messaging solution, then the schools version of SLOX is a very high value product that provides that in a shiny and supported package.
I know it's not (yet) open source, but it's a step in the right direction, and I don't think there is anything open source that can provide this functionality in a way that education management can be sold it.

Not had much experience setting this sort of thing up but, from a users
point of view I *personally* think Horde is the best web email
application I have come across.
Exchange has all the calendar integration etc. all in but the security
risks alone make it make it a no go for me, and OWA is very poor.
