The service in today's question is mysql, and the server is running at 3 with S20mysql in rc3.d, linked to mysql in init.d. I've had similar problems before with wireless lan scripts, which I ended up calling directly from boot.local.

Just one of the rcx.d directories?  Which one?  Also, which runlevel are
you actually using (probably 3 or 5)?
