What if the ident returned is an IP address? Unless they explain it like the RFC's do, ie: protocol:user:pass:wotsit:morewotsit prompt:/command -argument I think that's picking a bit too much though, you certainly didn't need to have access to a command line to do the paper, so it doesn't fit under this remit. Hi everyone I'm building a Samba server. Am I right in thinking that the NIC is going to be the bootleneck in most configurations and if so 1) how can I find out if the NIC is running at full duplex? 2) can anyone recommend a Gigabit card to work with Suse 8.2? Dave Williams

For those of you who've not come across Debian before, we're a world-wide voluntary organisation (read, chaotic jumble of mailing lists) that puts together a Linux distribution (and soon a HURD distribution) and gives it away. Debian doesn't pay people to do this, and doesn't sell what it produces, and in most legal senses doesn't really exist (i.e. the machines in the mirror network mostly belong to people like me, rather than to Debian, and the bandwidth is donated rather than paid for). This probably gives a pretty good feel for what Debian is all about: http://www.uk.debian.org/social_contract which you will notice leads into the The Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG), which is where the Open Source Definition came from. My internet machine, that hosts the Debian UK mirror, may be of use to OSIE, since it has about 30GB of spare disk, and a 20Mbit/s connection at a well connected ISP. This machine could act as either a primary host or mirror site for the web site, and could do DNS secondarying etc. as well. Something I'd be interested in working on (although perhaps a SuSE list is not the right place to spend too much time discussing this ;-) would be producing Debian CD images, tuned to the needs of educational users. Debian has accumulated some funds in the UK, and have been looking for a worthwhile cause to spend them on (we never really need to pay for anything that actually makes Debian work, so don't have much use for money), so we could probably afford to have a few thousand CDs pressed, and send them out to schools that are interested. You'd do best to put an SMTP relay on the gateway box (preferably this would be running a firewall - SuSE 8.2 is easy to setup for that), then redirecting that to an internal address for the actual webserver - SMTP relay would be both ways, hence changes to the mailserver config would probably be needed. A WWW or POP3 proxy may be needed too. Samba/Windows XP

Anyone using XP clients on a Samba PDC? Would it be a true statement to say that group policies (as in gpedit) only work on an Active Directory, and that secondly Active Directory is very experimental (or hard!) with Samba? Thus group policies are out? I've googled this point, and can;t find a definitive answer (or at least accounts of this vary). That being the case, I can't seem to be able to find out if NTconfig.pol in [netlogon] would apply some restrictions with XP? Or whether to do the *whole* lot with mandatory policies, which seems feasible. So... using Samba, what's the best way to enforce some client settings across 50 XP workstations with 600 users? (At the moment, I use a combination of mandatory policies and config.pol on W98 with Samba). Hi All, It has been suggested that the relationship between some exam board syllabuses and certain Microsoft products is not in the interest of fair competition. In my involvement with schoolforge.org.uk I have been asked to investigate this and see if there is grounds for a complaint to the Offiice of Fair Trading. Could anyone who has been influenced by this relationship in any way and is prepared to discuss it and/or be cited in the communication with the OFT please contact me at richard(a)caliban.org.uk. Further, if anyone has suggestions or other examples of this relationship please mail me?
