For those of you who've not come across Debian before, we're a world-wide voluntary organisation (read, chaotic jumble of mailing lists) that puts together a Linux distribution (and soon a HURD distribution) and gives it away. Debian doesn't pay people to do this, and doesn't sell what it produces, and in most legal senses doesn't really exist (i.e. the machines in the mirror network mostly belong to people like me, rather than to Debian, and the bandwidth is donated rather than paid for). This probably gives a pretty good feel for what Debian is all about: http://www.uk.debian.org/social_contract which you will notice leads into the The Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG), which is where the Open Source Definition came from. My internet machine, that hosts the Debian UK mirror, may be of use to OSIE, since it has about 30GB of spare disk, and a 20Mbit/s connection at a well connected ISP. This machine could act as either a primary host or mirror site for the web site, and could do DNS secondarying etc. as well. Something I'd be interested in working on (although perhaps a SuSE list is not the right place to spend too much time discussing this ;-) would be producing Debian CD images, tuned to the needs of educational users. Debian has accumulated some funds in the UK, and have been looking for a worthwhile cause to spend them on (we never really need to pay for anything that actually makes Debian work, so don't have much use for money), so we could probably afford to have a few thousand CDs pressed, and send them out to schools that are interested. We are actually going to continue using Windows clients (moving the entire school over to linux is an eventual goal but will not be happening for a few years yet). The solution getting them from a database is not possible as we do not keep a copy of users passwords. I'll bear in mind the idea of creating a database though and sticking them into an NT server and a linux server that way - could be useful in the future. No decisions have been made yet and I'm just looking into what is actually practical. From the look of that samba roadmap a great deal of the features there look useful to me - and looking at the alpha the group mapping feature looks particularly useful as presumably that fixes the problems I've had before where group policies don't work just by putting in a group name in poledit - you have to use default user and have multiple policy files and give each group a different netlogon dir (if people understand what i mean). Ok... In NT (any version...), there is a command line utility called <addusers>. With the /d switch, the usernames and groups are dumped to a specified filename. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3ben-us%3b199878 for more details. Then if you want to migrate the passwords, a tool such as L0phtCrack can get most (managed 98% here) passwords out of the SAM database, via pwdump. The alternative to the above is to wait until summer, then tell all the users their passwords have been reset for security reasons, then miss out the last step and just generate passwords for them. Migrating Users NT/2000 -> Linux

I am looking at migrating a whole set of users at a school from a current set up where they are on an NT to a linux server - ultimately because they're buying a whole set more workstations and can't afford the extra CALs for NT. Is there any easy way to migrate the users keeping their passwords (and home directories if possible but this could be done manually) in the same way that users can be migrated from NT to 2000 using the AD Migration Tool. I currently have a version of the users in a temporary 2k test server if this makes any difference or provides another way of doing it. Incidentally I will either be migrating them to redhat 8.0 or a version if suse if that makes any difference. Anybody done anything like this before? Two good packages that my five & nearly-four year old like are tuxpaint and gcompris. I would guess that both are available for SuSE. Tuxpaint is a drawing package specifically aimed at young kids, and my two have no pronblem using it. GCompris is a launcher for a whole raft of educational software - reading, writing, maths, puzzles, keyboard & mouse skills. It's very actively maintained and seems to have more in it every time I look. Suse Linux 8.0: trouble with audio

Hi! I'm an italian student in a school of Rome. We bought Suse Linux 8.0 and I tryed to install it on two computers we have at school. If we manage to let Linux work with these computer, we'll try to use it on all school's computers. Anyway, we get some trouble. The first computer, we tryed to install Linux on, is a Pentium IV 2.5 Ghz, with a large hard disk (120 GB) and a lot of RAM (512 Mb). On this computer the sound card (integrated on the main board) has not been recognized by Linux, and the sound doesn't work. The sound chipset name is: Sigmatel Stac 9750T. Also the printer (Hp deskjet 920C) doesn't work (maybe because of the USB ports...) and the modem (a PCI card): Aztech CNR 2800 W V92. On the other computer, a Pentium IV 1.6 Ghz, with 40 GB HDD and 256 MB RAM, Suse Linux 8.0 managed to recognize all the hardware, during installation. Anyway there's a bigger problem: when I reboot the system (after installation) it can't boot. It stops on the line about sound (something like "loading previous sound...") Backup Entire Harddrive

Hi, This has probably been the subject of previous discussion so apologies for asking, but can someone tell me how to backup an entire linux system so we can restore quickly in the event of a system crash? Hi Special points: yes, don't run the "upgrade" option from the CD unless you've never installed anything other than from the original disks.
