Open Source in Schools -- Meeting 12-03-2001 ============================================ A meeting has been arranged on Monday 12th March at: Westwood St Thomas School Westwood Road Salisbury Wilts SP2 9HS to discuss the use of Open Source software in schools. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Very many thanks to Paul Taylor of Westwood St Thomas for his offer of this venue. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Chris Dawkins of Felsted School has agreed to speak, as has Malcolm Herbert of Red Hat. It is hoped that other items of interest can be arranged. A proposal made by Michael Brown of Fen Systems for the formation of an Association for the promotion of Open Source software in education will be discussed. It is hoped that this can be combined with the recent discussion about a virtual schools' LUG and web site. A timetable for the day and detailed agenda will be posted shortly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- for discussion: --------------- I am a Council member of UKUUG and have been charged with the task of setting up a schools committee: I hope that in this way the various initiatives which have been made (including the work done by Malcolm when he was at BECTA and SuSE's work with schools) can be brought together to improve their impact and avoid duplication of work. Yesterday I set it up just b4 lunch, but with the allow/deny public_rooms before the nonedsites rules, and worked during lunch, nonedsites where okay, but during P4, the machines that didnt have access at lunch to any sites, now had access but no rules applied, so had access to all banned domains and nonedsites. The machines that had access at lunch where fine and still had rules applied. Disabling the 'windows' key

I'm doing the samba (ver. 2.0.5) at the moment and enjoying myself. I've set samba up as my NT login controller and used policy editor to disable access to windows unless properly logged in. I'm feeling good, I think I have secured access to the workstations. Within ten minutes of this new setup one of my more persistent Y6's have circumvented the whole setup by hitting the windows key (or CTRl-ESC) and running explorer from the task manager. Once the login window is dragged out of the way the children have unfettered access to the local harddrive. 1) How can I disable the windows key/CTRL-ESC shortcut? 2) Is there any way to limit access to the local harddrive even when someone is legitimately logged on? Running a Suse 6.4 server, on a 10-client win95 network, using samba for shares. Many thanks Darren Garside Freshford Primary School Bath

Virtual users in sendmail?

Is there any way to setup sendmail to receive email for virtual users. I.e. i dont have to create them a full account on the linux machine. I want to have a list of usernames and passwords which it reads and then using a pop3 server (qpopper?) they can connect and read them. I am migrating to linux on this server from windows - in windows i used mercury and it worked fine. Any ideas? You can disable the 'run' dialog from the 'start' button using a registry entry. And you can also edit the start menu programs to remove explorer. Squid and Netscape

This is another installment in the extensive series "Dave displays his ignorance". I can set up a box with Squid at home which other clients can access. I use wvdial to establish Internet access via a modem on the Linus box. However, what I really want to do is enable Squid at school but I don't understand how I tell Squid where to get it's Internet access. All other machines go through a gateway (a cisco router 172.19.50.1) and then to an LEA proxy 192.168.2.253:80. The login to the proxy is via Igear software. I've looked through squid.conf but can find nothing very relevant. As part of my playing around I thought that if I establish an Internet connection on the Linux machine by surfing with Netscape then Squid may get the necessary links established. However, my installation of Netscape (from SuSE 7.0) has no option to set a proxy address - it should be in Edit-Preferences-Advanced but it isn't. Dave Williams

Linking a mail server and squid to mysql

I want to setup a mail server and squid linked to mysql. Squid i have found a compilable external program to link it to mysql so that i have no problem with. But linking a mail server is my problem. I want to set it up so via a web interface (that i'm not bothered about at the moment) I can create users that run on both squid and mail - therefore they have an email address and access to the web (I want to restrict the access). Previously I have done this on windows using software called WinRoute but I am now moving to linux because of its increased stability.
