[opensuse-doc] Looking to help
Hi My name is Durant Haire and I am interested in writing/editing for the project. I'm new to Linux, but not to writing. I have a B.A. degree in English, journalism experience (both writing and copy editing), and I'm currently employed as a technical writer for one of the world's largest "big box" retailers. I edit and rewrite instruction manuals for product that is sold under our proprietary brands. I'm located in North Carolina, USA. Thanks Durant --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org

We will soon (before the end of the year) announce the "Lessons for Lizard" (LfL) project. It is a community cookbook-style book project for the openSUSE distribution. The texts are written in DocBook XML but for people with less experience in XML you can also write in pure ASCII. Someone (the community or the documentation department) have to transcript it into XML so we can create HTML and PDF of it. If you want to contribute to LfL you can write new texts, improve existing documents, ... Hope this helps. If you have any further questions feel free to ask. :-) Bye, Tom -- Thomas Schraitle ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX GmbH >o) Documentation Specialist Maxfeldstrasse 5 /\\ 90409 Nuernberg _\_v http://en.opensuse.org/Documentation_Team --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org
Since you have no knowledge of Linux, then you can write in other format's too (like MS Word Document, OpenDocument, HTML or Plain Text - like in Notepad) We, the community, will translate it. Anyways I recommend you to start learning Linux (if you want) from reading some tutorials/intro books. Some good ones are from: SUSE Official Documentation, Mandriva Books (Quickstart + Command-Line guide), Slackware, or Rute and The Linux Documentation Project. NOTE: TLDP and Rute are for advanced Linuxoids. Google for those. SUSE docs: http://en.opensuse.org/Documentation Rute: http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz Some of those docs are old but still relevant to SUSE Linux. LfL is really going to be something grand. SUSErs: I hope you won't hate me because I redirect people at different documentation - I really think we need to collect, or perhaps, rewrite those pieces of documentation to make our LfL project a real success (because, unfortunately SUSE docs doesn't cover all topics). --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org

No, don't worry. :-) It's always good to know how others do their job. And by the way: That's the nature of writing. Collecting, looking into existing texts, improving, ... our daily work. :)

I agree. We will suggest a simple structure that is easy to read, easy to write and (hopefully) easy to understand. To make it really useful we have to rewrite texts anyway.
(because, unfortunately SUSE docs doesn't cover all topics).
Yes, that's true. Our documentation can not cover all topics -- but that's specific to every piece of text. :) Bye, Tom -- Thomas Schraitle ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX GmbH >o) Documentation Specialist Maxfeldstrasse 5 /\\ 90409 Nuernberg _\_v http://en.opensuse.org/Documentation_Team --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org
