Hi all ! I am a SUSE Linux community member - and I would like to discuss the possibility of including more documentation in SUSE Linux - and - what most important install those docs by default. Two important things to add: 1) Some "Advanced Installation" topics - this is already exists in openSUSE wiki. 2) "For Windows Users" - this should describe how to work with SUSE Linux - the KDE desktop, installation of MP3 and other codecs - and where to find community help - such as Freenode IRC & Forums. All other Desktop OSes have this section - on Mac OS X & on each Windows there is a section for previous generation Windows users. SUSE Linux lacks here. maybe also add a few Free Linux books as optional rpms - such as "rute" and "maximum RPM". What do you think ?

there was a printed version times ago. there _are_ books (a lot) as rpm - see yast, search "books" jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

yep - now I found them - but unfortunately they create no menu entries in standard SUSE KDE menu. Should get fixed. Also, it will be good to add some more books to the package.
Also, they are - unfortunately in PDF format. This is bad because I can not copy & paste from such a book. Must be HTML.

I understand that our documentation team is working on putting them online as HTML in the future. Regards Christoph
Not online - I need them not just online - but also as rpm - that will add a link to my KDE menu.

But needs work as many other areas.
2) "For Windows Users" - this should describe how to work with SUSE Linux - the KDE desktop, installation of MP3 and other codecs - and where to find community help - such as Freenode IRC & Forums.
There is migration from windows http://en.opensuse.org/How_to_migrate_from_Windows Needs work too.
All other Desktop OSes have this section - on Mac OS X & on each Windows there is a section for previous generation Windows users. SUSE Linux lacks here.
Agree. Problem is the fast development of Linux and Linux based programs that demands large number of people involved. The openSUSE project is experiment that gives users opportunity to get involved in creation of distribution. We get operating system and programs, they get feedback and help in creation and popularization. It is that simple.
maybe also add a few Free Linux books as optional rpms - such as "rute" and "maximum RPM".
jdd answered this.

Yes we need a lot of documents about almost any aspect of computer usage. Thanks for your articles on opensuse.org about FreeNX and qemu. Please check to see do you like formating of FreeNX. BTW, why you put test, is it package installed, as a first step. It has to be, otherwise it is a bug. -- Regards, Rajko.

Well - it's wonderful ! I didn't thought that anybody read it - not to mention know that it is my :) How did you find that I created those ? Just my name at the end of an article or you have access to wiki changes ? 1) One thing - I wish to improve - is to know how many user (different IP addresses) read my articles. This will improve my motivation - and give me ability to write more articles. Possible to implement ? 2) Maybe also create some kind of "feedback" - a link to a blank wiki page - so that users will write what they think about the article? This is again - important to keep authors motivated. 3) how to add pictures to my articles ? I want to add two screenshots of FreeNX.

I don't think so :-(

each article has a "discussion page" with it for this purpose
3) how to add pictures to my articles ? I want to add two screenshots of FreeNX.
you have a link 'upload" on the sidebar, use it with [[Image:imagename]] jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

The name, otherwise it would be just your nick in the article history. If you want to introduce yourself you may use your personal page. You have as much access as I do :-) http://en.opensuse.org/Special:Specialpages

Here you can see number of visits: http://en.opensuse.org/Special:Popularpages but that counts your visits and other members of openSUSE too.

I'm repeating this time after time, but as of now nothing in site.
3) how to add pictures to my articles ? I want to add two screenshots of FreeNX.
jdd answered this one. That is classic wiki link to image. Visit http://en.opensuse.org/Wiki_Team to see Peter's way to link in html style. That is new in mediawiki. I'm not sure is ti supported in version that is included with SUSE 10. My mediawiki is downloaded from www.mediawiki.org site. -- Regards, Rajko.

installation of the codecs can only get described, if you describe also how to pay license fees (which is basicaly impossible for an end-user afaik :/ ).

The SUSE documentation team did plan to make it possible for everyone to use the their resources (tools/services). So books/chapters could be written in the same style. Unfortunatly they were very busy until now with SLES 10 documentation. We have the hope that this will improve when SLES 10 books are out of the door :) bye adrian -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany email: adrian@suse.de
