Hi Chris:
I suggest you raise your openSUSE Ceph-related questions on the openSUSE
Ceph mailing list instead of ceph-users. For info on how to join, go to
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Ceph#Communication
The version of Ceph currently shipping in Leap 15.0 is built against
Python 3 and this, as you found, exposes python2-specific code in the
Ceph codebase.
We might reconsider this and push a Python 2 build to Leap 15.0 - let's
discuss it on opensuse-ceph.
Thanks,
Nathan

Hi Eugen:
I'm adding the opensuse-ceph mailing list to CC - if you'd like to
subscribe, here are the instructions:
http://lists.ceph.com/pipermail/ceph-users-ceph.com/2017-February/016102.ht…
To answer your question: only Luminous will ship in the official Leap
42.3 repo. If you want the official version of Jewel, you'll need to use
Leap 42.2 (which is still in maintenance, by the way).
That said, if you're willing to try an unofficial devel project, you
could try to install Jewel on Leap 42.3 from this OBS repo:
https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/filesystems:ceph:jewel/ceph
(Hint: click on the "Download Package" link. Also note that I only just
now added the Leap 42.3 build target, so it will take some time for the
packages to build.)
Cheers,
Nathan

Hi All,
https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/497904 came through the other
day, which is a request to submit ceph-deploy from SUSE:SLE-12-SP3:GA to
openSUSE:Leap:42.3. If accepted, that will bring ceph-deploy up to
version 1.5.34 in Leap 42.3. I don't think there's anything wrong with
that, so we should probably accept it, given that ceph-deploy is already
in Leap and Tumbleweed (although, in Tumbleweed it's slightly newer --
version 1.5.36, same as in filesystems:ceph).
This leads me to the question though, what to do with ceph-deploy on
openSUSE going forwards. I'm personally supportive of dropping it in
favour of deepsea, except for the fact that ceph-deploy still features
prominently in the upstream ceph docs. Also, upstream has been doing
minor works (they're up to 1.5.38 now, which includes support for ceph-mgr).
So, what next for ceph-deploy on openSUSE? Leave it as-is? Keep it
indefinitely (and periodically pull updates in from upstream)?
Eventually deprecate and remove it?
Thanks,
Tim

In order to get DeepSea into Leap 42.3 [0], we first need to get it into
Tumbleweed.
This could be accomplished by first getting it into filesystems:ceph [1]
and then submitting it to openSUSE:Factory [2] from there, in accordance
with [3] (this includes writing an "intent to submit" email to the
opensuse-factory mailing list). Then we could grit our teeth and wait
for the Factory reviewers to tell us what they think about it.
Anyone interested in helping me with this Herculean task?
If so, the first thing to do would be to submit the current deepsea
package to filesystems:ceph and post the SR# here.
Nathan

Hi All,
We've just created a new opensuse-ceph(a)opensuse.org mailing list. The
purpose of this list is discussion of Ceph specifically on openSUSE.
For example, topics such as the following would all be welcome:
* Maintainership of projects on OBS under
https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/filesystems:ceph
* Feedback on our hopefully helpful wiki page at
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Ceph
* Issues with Ceph packages shipped with openSUSE Leap and Tumbleweed
* Ceph deployment tools on openSUSE
If general or non-distro specific Ceph-related topics come up, we'll
provide direction back to the appropriate upstream list :-)
Regards,
Tim
