Summary: ZMD - unable to resolve dependancies Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@tpg.com.au QAContact: jsrain@novell.com
ZMD is unable to resolve dependencies - see screen shot and attached files.
I am impressed with ZMD's update reliability - however I am still of the opinion that ZMD having root authority is remove an entire installation. I feel this is an unacceptable internal risk. I feel that ZMD functions very well now in installing updates etc, however I feel that giving the user 2 click to remove the entire installation a totally unacceptable internal risk.
I feel this should be removed.
Q. Would there be any advantage into creating an authoritative user which is not root that ZMD could function correctly. Any application with permenent root authority concerns me

------- Comment #3 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2007-01-30 20:54 MST ------- Unable to attach ZMD file 2 of 3 and 3 of 3 as bugzilla treats .BZIP2 files as empty have 0 bytes which is not the case. The attached files shows most current log files - please advise IF you require auto compressed .BZIP2 log files and I will manually extract each and re compress to another format. Please consider correcting this fault in Bugzilla. Even if you define the file type upload it reports file as 0 bytes.
Let me know and if you require them I will do as above.

------- Comment #4 from mrashmiranjan@novell.com 2007-02-01 02:27 MST ------- It does not seem to be a problem. While doing resolve dependency ZMD found that there are some patches which need to be installed in order to install the selected package does not apply to the system. There are some to-be-installed packages which conflict with already installed packages. Thats why ZMD gave the message(Not error) that the Dependency Resolution Failed in stead of installing incompatible/conflicting packages/patches and creating problems for other applications and making the system unstable.

------- Comment #5 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2007-02-01 13:53 MST ------- Yes it is a problem. In normal situations where ZMD fines a conflict it offers the user the option to delete/keep the conflicting items and the user is able to be guided into resolving the dependencies in a similar way to software management.
The title of the error message was 'unable to resolve dependencies' as it was unable to guide the user into what needs to be deleted in order for most of the selected packages to be installed. In the extreme case presented the system made no attempt in asking the user that in order to keep X the user needs to not (delete) install Y

------- Comment #8 from schubi@novell.com 2007-02-08 09:58 MST ------- Could you please attach the zmd.db or make it available on another server, if it is too large for bugzilla ?
Another possibility: Please to try to reproduce the error with YaST Online Update and generate a testcase described here: http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs/YaST#I_want_to_report_a_bug_related_to_package_d...
And a last possibility: Restart the ZMD server with the environment ZYPP_FULLLOG=1, reproduce this bug and attach the logfiles again: export ZYPP_FULLLOG=1; rczmd restart

--- Comment #11 from Scott Couston alpha096@virginbroadband.com.au 2009-03-25 17:54:15 MST --- In version 11.0 - 11.1 this dependency issue has a new option "Ignore Some Dependency issues with nnnnnnnn" If the user selects this option good help them - the RPM database is guaranteed to fully corrupt. The option of this new "Ignore Some Dependency issues with nnnnnnnn" is not acceptable at all and offer no valuable solution to any dependency issues.
Happy to leave this as wontfix until this option of "Ignore Some Dependency issues with nnnnnnnn"
Starts to create more and more user issues that will almost certainly present some time in 11.0 and 11.1
