[Bug 795913] New: empty passphrase at plymouth LUKS prompt results in endless loop
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=795913 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=795913#c0 Summary: empty passphrase at plymouth LUKS prompt results in endless loop Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Security AssignedTo: security-team@suse.de ReportedBy: d_werner@gmx.net QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:17.0) Gecko/17.0 Firefox/17.0 Observed on 2 systems with openSUSE 12.2 both have /boot on /dev/sda1 and on /dev/sda2 a LVM volume containing LUKS encrypted / and swap, created with YaST during the installation. One system was originally installed with 11.4 and then upgraded to 12.1 and 12.2, the other one was originally installed with 12.1 and upgraded to 12.2 both use "grub1" When at the plymouth prompt for the LUKS passphrase a wrong passphrase is entered a new prompt comes until the pass phrase is entered correctly. This is correct behavior. When NO passphrase is entered (e.g. accidentally Enter is pressed before typing the passphrase) the system enters an endless cycle searching for volumes. It does not become operational. The problem is not obvious because the plymouth splash screen looks like a "normal boot process", but it never finishes and there is never again a prompt for the passphrase, the system never gets operational. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.system with LUKS encrypted rootfs in a LVM volume 2.at the plymouth LUKS passphrase prompt hit enter without typing another character 3.system enters the endless cycle - this can only be seen when pressing ESC to see the log output, otherwise the system just looks "frozen", only way out is ctrl-alt-del or poweroff Actual Results: The system is not usable if accidentally no passphase is entered. Expected Results: A new prompt for the passphrase should be displayed in order to continue the boot process. Maybe zero length passphrases should not be allowed at all, then this case can also be excluded by the plymouth passphrase dialog. log output which can be seen after pressing ESC, not sure about the order, it is permanently repeated: Reading all physical volumes, this may take a while...
