please try the following: - compile the module without optimizations and see if that helps
I compiled Xen's libxc python extension (xc.so) with "-g -O0" and was then able to start a vm. So without optimizations the problem doesn't appear.
"without optimizations the problem doesn't appear" = miscompilation of the module which means that either you hit a gcc bug, or there is some undefined behavior used in the affected functions. valgrind won't be of any use here, and i won't be able to help much too. you said earlier that (In reply to comment #14)
Adding print statements in pyxc_dom_set_policy_cpuid also showed successful returns but had the side effect of no longer seeing the python exception.
please try doing that again (with the optimized version, of course) and post a diff of what you've done to make the exception go away. at that point it will be easy for somebody from gcc team to tell us either that we need to fix something (and what), or that they need to fix something -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As there is currently no support for power-management in Xen (Bug 428284) supporting qemu-kvm (Bug 537082) will to my mind be of higher value to the average users (professional users use SLES anyway). Average users do not necessarily need paravirtualization; it is only supported for newer Linux kernels and hvm is just fast enough on newer machines.

Created an attachment (id=318185) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=318185) [details] Source and object files for the original failing code and working version
Applying this diff to the source stops the 'unknown opcode' exception from happening. See the attachment for source and object files. The question now is who can look at this?
We'll need c/s 20125 for this to be fixed: Without the extra function call, the call to PyArg_ParseTuple() clobbers a saved register in pyxc_dom_set_policy_cpuid()'s stack frame (which gcc - needlessly - extends by one word when the function call is present). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Apologies, is this a notification that there are fixes for openSUSE 11.2, that previous (additional?) Xen fixes are being made a part of SuSE Linux Enterprise 11, or to the upcoming SLE 11 SP1? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It is a notification specific to SLE11 that the update channel has a fix for this bug. SLE11 SP1 already has the fix as does os11.3. os11.2 is not being updated at this time. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
