Of that, 3076 kB is shared libraries. On my machine (with similar VIRT results), mixer_applet2 is using 3700 kB for DATA. RES is generally a more useful metric than VIRT. Looking at your output, the biggest offenders seem to be: 58m seamonkey-bin: Not launched by default, and memory use depends strongly on patterns of usage. Not necessarily an accurate reflection of the OS itself. 35m X: This includes video memory, which doesn't affect main memory and can't really be used for much else. Don't lose sleep over this. 31m k3b: Again, not launched by default. I can understand why an app that does so much I/O might want some memory for caching. Can you repeat this without any apps (seamonkey, k3b) running, and with the full output of top? It's not clear from here where you're getting the 650MB figure, for example. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

An OS that's not running any apps not not that useful, nor representative for resource usage. OK, I only ran seamonkey (Using a Internet browser seems quite standard usage these days). Here's an updates top. Even the "RES" seems a bit high (e.g. 17MB for an applet that stores tiny notes; complete OS/2 needed less memory): PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 4061 xxx12345 22 7 144m 59m 9872 S 5.3 17.4 1:00.41 beagled 4011 xxx12345 18 0 143m 15m 10m S 0.0 4.6 0:12.13 nautilus 3680 root 25 0 138m 988 760 S 0.0 0.3 0:00.32 nscd 4215 xxx12345 15 0 133m 53m 18m S 0.0 15.6 2:06.77 seamonkey-bin 4091 xxx12345 17 0 119m 13m 10m S 0.0 3.9 0:02.93 nm-applet 4072 xxx12345 19 0 107m 13m 9624 S 0.7 4.0 0:10.86 main-menu 4010 xxx12345 15 0 101m 12m 9456 S 0.0 3.6 0:05.46 gnome-panel 4078 xxx12345 15 0 100m 11m 8700 S 0.0 3.2 0:02.21 mixer_applet2 4154 xxx12345 25 0 99176 13m 4552 S 0.0 3.9 0:13.05 evolution-data- 2840 root 15 0 93504 16m 6268 S 1.7 4.9 2:02.94 X 4076 xxx12345 18 0 67680 12m 9668 S 0.0 3.6 0:08.54 intlclock-apple 4068 xxx12345 16 0 61944 6660 5684 S 1.7 1.9 0:24.74 gnome-cups-icon 4074 xxx12345 17 0 58780 17m 12m S 0.0 5.0 0:09.33 tomboy 4040 xxx12345 15 0 49596 15m 12m S 0.0 4.6 0:05.77 beagle-search 5198 xxx12345 39 19 46600 18m 8548 S 0.0 5.4 1:08.36 beagled-helper -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Wrt to debugging, sure - if you file a bug, presumably you want it fixed ;-) if so - we need help to find out what went wrong: this is not the behavior we experience (needless to say). Is it specific to this USB stick ? is there a large root directory on the stick ? if not, can you copy half of the files to another directory, and repeat [ killall -9 nautilus in between to reset memory use reliably ]. After halving the set repeatedly, you should end up with a set of files that cause the memory explosion. Failing that, running a tool like 'memprof' on nautilus may help. While looking whether the problem is still current, I also realized that the evince-thumbnailer process (most likely responsible for creating thumbnails for PDF files) takes a lot of CPU time (>95%) and is quite slow.
