[Bug 503315] New: NVIDIA TwinView Breaks Suse Splash screen and cannot find correct vga setting on boot
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=503315 Summary: NVIDIA TwinView Breaks Suse Splash screen and cannot find correct vga setting on boot Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: johan@fsr.co.za QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.30; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.648; .NET CLR 3.5.21022; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729) The beautiful Suse Splash screen worked perfectly. I then installed NVIDIA TwinView with NVIDIA proprietary drivers and used NVIDIA SAX setup to configure Twinview. Now the beautiful Suse Splash screen doesn't work anymore and also it does not recognise any boot vga setting except "normal". Even if I set it to "normal", the boot doesn't ask for a vga setting from a list anymore, but the splash screen is still gone - I'm left with booting with screens full of text output until SAX starts. Therefore the bug is: NVIDIA TwinView Breaks Suse Splash screen and cannot find correct vga setting on boot. I know this is NVIDIA proprietary driver, but bootsplash can surely be fixed to work around this somehow? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install Suse 11.1 Standard on Hardware with NVIDIA Graphics Card (5200) 2.Install NVIDIA Proprietary Drivers per SUSE NVIDIA HOWTO 3.Configure Graphics by using SUSE Graphics Adapter Editor First, SVIDEO, PAL-I settings 4. Configure Twinview via NVIDIA SAX editor. 5. Reboot That's it, your bootspash is gone and it will ask you for a valid vga setting on boot-up from a list. Expected Results: Should boot as on a fresh install with bootsplash undisturbed. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Neither does make sense for me, but I cannot see sny other way how it could break bootsplash... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

SaX2 only touches menu.lst when fbdev needs to be used. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am glad to provide any further info required just tell me what you need. It seems that the video settings is changed into something that is not recognised anymore for the default screen (or what the system thinks is the default screen). Maybe it is confusing the twinview TV screen with the computer screen. Although when Sax starts then the system knows very well what the computer screen is and the tv screen and their respective resolutions. It only when booting that it is confused. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Simply use a reasonsable value for it (16bits). You can list the available ones with hwinfo --framebuffer -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
