[Bug 433723] New: Failed to initialize software repositories

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=433723 Summary: Failed to initialize software repositories Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: frankebay99@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Community User At the very beginning of the installation, the DVD x86-64bits .ISO cannot initialize software repositories. Screenshot attached. I have tried different things and cannot make it work. I do not want to wait Beta 3 for a fix. What is the workaround to install the DVD 64bits ISO from both the ISO burnt on a DVD and VirtualBox (either by DVD or .ISO emulated as DVD)? tnx -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It passed. I did 2 things: First I burnt it on DVD for installation on my HD in real life. I did not try this yet. Second, I used the .ISO to try it in VBox. It does happen in VBox. I used the .iso linked as a file in VBox (emulates CD Drive), therefore I did not alter at all the .iso because it's simply linked to the VM in VBox. Since the MD5 check passed and I use the iso straight in VBox (no alteration), I don't know what could cause this. I am not the only one, someone else on suse forums has the same issue. I then tried: linuxrc.debug=-udev.mods Result: Very small change, it still pops the error but instead of /hdc in the URL it is /sr0. Real result is that I still can't go past that pop-up, installation does not go any further. I then at last tried: brokenmodules=ide-generic,linuxrc.debug=-udev.mods Result: No change, same as original error. As a reminder, I use the downloaded DVD .ISO file x86-64 linked as an ISO file for CD emulation under VBox 1.6.2 non-OSE. I discovered that this problem happens only under Vbox 1.6.2 (I use the non-OSE version, don't know about OSE version). Using Vbox 2.0.2 works fine, even under MAC OSX. Also booting from DVD in real life (not virtual) works fine as well. I see we now have the possibility to choose the architecture (x86 or x86-64). That choice is not given under Vbox 1.6.2 cuz that version does not support 64bits. Maybe part of the problem, but to me we could close to bug, unless it is important for opensuse developers to support backward compatibility with Vbox 1.6.2 non-OSE. tnx -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's not a VBox error per se, it happens from within the VM itself. How does y2log from a host machine log errors inside a VM? I ran again my VM installation of 11.1 KDE 64-bits from iso DVD file and I got the error at the same place, as expected, but my y2log of my host machine did not append with any information (still shows yesterday's date). I cannot get y2log from the VM installation, cuz nothing is installed yet. I get the repo initialization failure right at the beginning of the instllation, during the Initialize Package Manager sub-step of the System Probing step. This is the first screen that comes up after the boot menu when booting from DVD. I have attached another pic to help figure out when it happens. BTW, it says OpenSuse 11.0 on top left corner, I guess that has been fixed already. :) tnx -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't see anybody here requesting the host machine logs. Anyway, is this still an issue at all? I clicked on the Installation in green boot menu, then it opens the first installation page and when it looks for repos it fails there. I don't know where the y2log would be saved (memory or in a temp folder? where is it saved when the partition is not even formatted? It fails far before I reach that point). I am scheduled to test RC1 on Nov 13-14 when it comes out and will retest this. I wonder if the problem is actually VBox, cuz on their latest version it works fine. I believe it's a bug with VBox v1.6.2. Using latest versions of VBox with 11.1B2 as VM works fine. I believe we can close the ticket, as just upgrading VBox to newer version solves the problem. tnx -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You can switch to a console (in the VM) or open an xterm using ctr+alt+shift+x and type save_y2logs logs-tarball-name.tgz and put the .tgz file e.g. on a flash disk, or a host machine partition, or scp it somewhere if you have network connetion at that point. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I didn't know it was easy to access the in-mem fs. I was able to open Xterm and tar the logs. But I am unable to transmit. No network at that point and no usb as well (VBox 1.6.2 does not support USB so early in installation).
