After searching for a while I discovered hat openSUSE is using latest version from 2002. mpg321 may have been necessary since mpg123 was'nt GPL'ed. AFAIK I read the new license of mpg123 it's LGPL. It is current (2008) and working stable on x86 and x86_64 (at least on my systems). I don't know whether both are compatible (CLI parameters and such) but if so, a symlink mpg321->mpg123 could be useful too. Reassigning to Henne as he maintains the mpg321 package in the Packman repository and adding Detlef in CC:, being the current maintainer of mpg123 there.
