Hi,
The bug #216039, that was recently closed, still persists on my openSUSE 10.2 Beta2+ install... yesterday, I've upgraded all my system from Factory, using smart and the repo avaiable there. Even with a new home directory, Evolution still does not save the password for my IMAP and my SMTP-Auth server. Everytime I send a message, Evolution asks the password for SMTP. Everytime I close, and restart Evolution, it asks the IMAP server password.

Evolution stores password in gnome-keyring, since 2.8.x. Please check whether your keyring daemon is running or not. If not, try running it - IIRC, its more like ssh-agent, you have to export PID and SOCKET_ID.

Try logging out of your environment, open a console (ctrl+alt+f1) and log in as that user there. Move all your configuration files and directories (things that begin with a period ".") to a backup location. Hit ctrl+alt+f7 and log back into Gnome/KDE and re-enter all your evolution information. See if that fixes the issue. That's what did it for me. Unfortunately I don't know what specific file/folder was causing the issue.

Nope, no cigar. Removing all configuration files from the user profile, does not solve the problem. You still have to manually start the keyring daemon and start evo from the same console session to fix the problem.
Note, this is a brand new clean install. No configuration or mail files where inherited from previous installs.
I'm still a bit puzled, as to why the keyring daemon is not started automatically. I know that many KDE users won't run GNOME apps, and don't want GNOME daemons to run. But still, the apps need to work though - even in KDE.

Following Jan's tip, I could finally use Evolution without asking me passwords all the time. I did exactly what he said, as a regular user. I don't understand why you changed to root. gnome-keyring should be running as your normal user, and evolution too.
You can write a simple shell script and put it on kde's autostart folder, so gnome-keyring and the export variables start running just after kde is loaded.

You are very correct...I apologize for the error. I am fairly new to Linux and not real familiar with the command line. I did as you suggested, as regular user and it worked fine. Perhaps the first time I tried it, I had not typed something correctly.
Yes, that did work and I was asked to enter a password for the keyring, after which the password would be remembered. Once I closed Evolution and restarted it, I was back to where I was asked for a password each time again, until I ran Jan's information in the terminal again. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it worked, as long as I left Evolution open, after running the terminal commands. Once I closed Evolution, I would have to re-enter the terminal commands again. I am guessing this is the same experience you had.
If this is so, could you possibly walk me through the creation of a shell script and explain how to put it in the kde autostart folder? Again, I apologize for being so limited on my knowledge here, but I am trying to learn.

I could solve the problem, by recompiling evolution-data-server using Suse's source RPM. The only thing I had to do was change the "--enable-gnome-keyring" from yes to no in the ./configure line, inside evolution-data-server.spec.
If you use the x86-64 version of Suse 10.2 and want to use my RPM, grab it from: www.thiagovinhas.org/evolution-data-server-1.8.2-5tv.x86_64.rpm
The problem is solved for me. I just can't imagine why Suse turned on the gnome-keyring feature, since there are a lot of KDE users using Evolution, and there's no much sense using gnome-keyring for this people.

I guess the first time I restarted it didn't work properly but the second, third, fourth, fifth, & sixth time worked like a charm. Simply install pam_keyring, log out, hit ctrl+alt+backspace, when X restarts login and you should be all set. If it doesn't work the first time, repeat the previous steps. Thanks Craig. Probably the easiest way to fix this in the distribution would be to add a requirement to the RPM for evolution that requires "pam_keyring" to be installed.

Here is how I would personally use it. I'd download the script in /home/aj/bin and then create a new application launcher on my desktop that has /home/aj/bin/nameofscript as the path for the application.

When I sync my Sony PDA with Evolution, the sync works fine...I can even see that the contacts have been entered in the Evolution folder in the Home area, however, the names and addresses in Evolution Contacts only appear as a gray box...no information appears and the gray box shows as null value.
This is the first time I've really had problems with Evolution in the year I've been using it...and none of these problems with Fedora nor earlier versions of SUSE....so I'm guessing these are just some minor issues that have to be sorted out with this version of SUSE and Evolution.

I noticed that this is the cause of all our troubles. What's happening is when GDM automatically logs you in you're not properly authenticated with "pam_keyring." Following the advice with starting the keyring daemon works, one just had to make sure that the data server is restarted too. nevertheless I find it very annoying that you have to do all the setup stuff with the script. so I think either evolution should be compiled without the keyring support as it was in 10.1 or it should be made configurable. or evolution itself (which is currently a link to the real binary) should be a script that checks if the daemon is there and stuff is exported. since gnome uses orbit I really wonder why there is no mechanism to do all this without starting and exporting the daemon stuff. works for things like gconfd etc. too.

It's far too difficult to use this way for me and continually typing the email password is the most annoying thing I've had with SUSE in the three versions I've used. Isn't looking too good for a fix being done, either. If there isn't something fixed in it by the first, I'm going to switch over to Thunderbird(as many of the forums are recommending), which I hate, since I can't sync my PDA with it, but at least I won't have the password issue. If I have to go that route, I won't be coming back to Evolution...period.

As such and since it's not only a major annoyance, but marked "Critical" as well, I would think that someone within Novell, aware of the bug, would advise other responsible individuals and who or what was going to fix it. The same bug appears in another Novell bug reporting area, as well, I believe. It seems a bit of coordination between developers could easily and quickly resolve it. Again, I'm no expert, but internal communications seems to hold the key to a solution.

This script makes use of the fact, that on a Suse 10.2 installation gnome resides under /opt/gnome. This is important.
4. We are back under the console. Now we enter "chmod uog+x evolution" 5. The last command is: "ln -s evolution evolution-2.8"
Now, what have we done? In the path, where Linux searches for executables, the bin subpath of your homedirectory is the very first. Therefore, if there is a script or programm in there, which is named evolution, Linux will start it when you start evolution. As sometimes the KDE entries for evolution start evolution-2.8, we made a shortcut, so that either of the names work. Our script will determine, if the keyring program has been started, and if so, it will start evolution. If the keyring daemon has not been started, it will start the daemon, and store the necessary runtime variables.
The whole problem has nothing to do with evolution being compiled with keyring support, but rather with a sloppy way of starting it. As Suse transitions to Gnome as default desktop, noone anticipated, that KDE users might use programs from Gnome, which will need the keyring manager. I am not sure if there is a subsidiate in the Linux Standard Base for a keyring manager, but for now, if anyone of Novell is listening, please submit a patch, which will start the keyring manager for gnome with kde startup just in case.

Sorry for my "home user" frustration. I worked in hardware for many years and with software beginning with DOS 5.0, but Linux has been about a two year learning process for me. Now, over 60, I don't pick it up as quickly as when I was 30!
I try to keep five computers here at home up and going with SUSE, besides another 4 or 5 for non-technical friends and family, so a problem with something like Evolution is a pain.
My real frustration has been with Evolution...most everything else, I can find some solution on one of the many forums. It seems that every time Evolution is touched in SUSE, a new glitch is present. Three version ago, it was wonderful. Then, two versions back, Evolution would no longer sync with my Sony PDA. This time, that is fixed, but I have this keyring problem and while all my contacts sync perfectly with Evolution again, all I visually see is a gray box showing "null" for each contact. That is even though the sync went perfectly and the contacts are in the correct folder when I look in Konquoror. The issues have only occurred with Evolution in SUSE. Odd to me, I suppose, since both are Novell products.
Again, thanks so much and I hope you can figure out this minor glitch with the script you have offered.

Thanks Thiago. Your .rpm works for me. Maybe Suse can modify it as a patch for all KDE users. I wanted to add a comment about Pam_keyring. If people will check the system requirements, Pam_keyring requires and Gnome session. NOt much help when the problem is with the KDE desktop not using Gnome-Keyring-Daemon correctly.

I removed the script I got from this bug report from /bin/ and that put me back to the initial problem of having to enter my password each and every time I send or receive email. I have the account checked to "remember password" as I have done in all previous installations.
Once I put the script from here back into /bin/, I'm back where I only have to enter the keyring password when I first open Evolution.
Am I doing something wrong?

I have all the channels I can find (probably 12 or 15 of them) in SMART, including GNOME Community, GNOME Stable, openSUSE, suse-non-oss, openSUSE 10.2, openSUSE-update, SUSE 10.2 Repository and a bunch more.
Could anyone tell me what I could add to SMART in the way of a Channel, to get correct EDS version? I have all updates performed, as I check them daily and there are no updates in any of the sources I have, available.

I downloaded them and checked them with KPackage....and here is what I get from KPackage when I test, rather than install the EDS:
"Package evolution-data-server-1.8.3-4.2 (which is newer than evolution-data-server-1.8.2-7) is already installed.
It appears to me (and I could be wrong) that the patch does not address the later version of Evolution, which I have installed.

With the official package, I had problems when I synched my Sony PDA. It would synch fine, but then, where the names, addresses and such should be in the contacts, all I would see were blank gray boxes, instead of the information. That never happened with the earlier versions of Evolution in SUSE, either.
I am sure you are correct about the later GNOME Community version, as I do have GNOME Community as one of the update channels I use in Smart package management.
