Summary: sound card C-media CM6501 not listed Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 5 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: m.munnix@redcross.be QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: ---
Created an attachment (id=150164) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=150164) log from hwinfo --sound --log log
this sound device is integrated on the main board (ASRock AM2NF3-VSTA) and is listed in the manual as C-Media CM6501. The manual does not state that it is a usb device, so it would be nice if YaST sound module could at least list it with the correct driver.
1. model CM6501 not listed for this manufacturer 2. not detected as sound device by hwinfo
The driver "snd_usb_audio" works

--- Comment #8 from Steffen Winterfeldt snwint@novell.com 2007-10-09 03:40:47 MST --- You could add to (or create) /var/lib/hardware/hd.ids an entry like
vendor.id usb 0x0000 &device.id usb 0x0000 +class.id 0x401
You can get the real vendor/device numbers to fill in by running 'hwinfo --usb'.
After that, 'hwinfo --sound' (and yast) should see your card.

--- Comment #9 from Marcelo Borro marcelovborro@ig.com.br 2007-10-09 19:32:48 MST --- I did add the following lines to /var/lib/hardware/hd.ids: vendor.id usb 0x0d8c &device.id usb 0x0201 +device.name PnP Audio Device +class.id 0x401
But I still got no sound. And 'hwinfo --sound' still shows nothing. I did modprobe snd_usb_audio and if I talk on the mic I can hear on the speakers, but no sound on applications. This bug is present only in x86_64? Are there any reports of this bug in i386?

--- Comment #10 from Steffen Winterfeldt snwint@novell.com 2007-10-10 03:48:53 MST --- Uhm, sorry. You have to set 'hwprobe=+usb' as well. Either as environment variable or as boot parameter.
So, 'hwprobe=+usb hwinfo --sound' should do.
(BTW, you can use 'hwinfo --dump-db 0' to see whether your hd.ids file was read correctly.)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=290279#c11
--- Comment #11 from Marcelo Borro marcelovborro@ig.com.br 2007-10-10 07:35:31 MST --- Thanks :-) Adding hwprobe=+usb as boot parameter allows me to find the usb sound with 'hwinfo --sound':
heliserver:~ # hwinfo --sound 33: USB 00.0: 0401 Multimedia audio controller [Created at usb.122] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_d8c_201_noserial_if0 Unique ID: X7GA.VsPijs0Hbo8 Parent ID: k4bc.hL0pXfs9d15 SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/usb1/1-7/1-7:1.0 SysFS BusID: 1-7:1.0 Hardware Class: sound Model: "C-Media Electronics PnP Audio Device" Hotplug: USB Vendor: usb 0x0d8c "C-Media Electronics, Inc." BUT it still do not show on yast and alsaconf, so there's no sound yet. Checking over the Internet, I found several reposrts on Ubuntu, but the sound is identified by alsa on Ubuntu. I think that this is all I need: How to make alsa use the snd-usb-audio if alsaconf or yast do not lists it?

--- Comment #14 from Marcelo Borro marcelovborro@ig.com.br 2007-10-10 08:55:38 MST --- Oops, I think I solved this: I've added the option "options snd-usb-audio index=0" to the alsa file and everything seems to work fine now. So, my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa file now looks like this:
options snd-usb-audio index=0
# ALSA portion alias char-major-116 snd alias snd-card-0 snd-usb-audio
# OSS/Free portion alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
# card #1 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
I'll check if the boot parameter "hwprobe=+usb" is needed, and the /var/lib/hardware/hd.ids too. I'm building 6 machines with this mobo, I can test it a lot ;-) I'll try adding an external USB sound card to check for any problem too.
Thanks :-)

--- Comment #15 from Marcelo Borro marcelovborro@ig.com.br 2007-10-10 15:22:40 MST --- I did a fresh install of openSuse 10.3 x86_64 on one of these mobos ( Asus M2N-E SLI) with the sound card C-media CM6501. All I needed to do was to create the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa with the content of my previous post. And assign the speaker channel to kmix.
Sound is ok until now. It would be nice if yast could detect and configure CM6501 automatically, so newbies would have less difficulties ( This mobo is quite commom in Brazil ).
If any further info about this sound board is needed, please feel free to ask :-)
Thanks

The Yast module correctly finds an unknown device (not in the database) and wants to use the driver suggested by hwinfo (snd-usb_audio). This is correct, but then suddenly the information is lost and there is no sound card.
