If you toggle that off (which, on most versions of gnome means just go ahead and logoff when I press the logoff button), the logoff dialog still pops up and the background still fades (which is incredibly painful when running remote via an NX session :-). From the panel bar on the bottom of the screen Click on Computer Click on Logoff (or is it logout?)
