[Bug 1021325] New: System doesn't see USB disks
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1021325 Bug ID: 1021325 Summary: System doesn't see USB disks Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.2 Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE 42.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem Assignee: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: antoine.mechelynck@gmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: Community User Blocker: --- Flags: SHIP_STOPPER? The following is a copy-paste from a terminal, done at a time when two USB disks were plugged in (and had been since before the latest reboot). As can be seen, the system doesn't know about them (/dev/sdb and /dev/sdc aren't known, and neither are the /dev/disk/by-id lines for them). This is an openSUSE 42.1 system with all current patches, including those from the Update-Test repository. One of these USB disks is partitioned (there is an MSDOS partition table on it, defining two partitions), the other is an openSUSE 42.2 bootable "system DVD" (see https://en.opensuse.org/Live_USB_stick ). I think this means partitions on the latter disk too but I'm not sure. linux-2iyu:~ # parted -l || echo 'exit status' $? (In reply to Tony Mechelynck from comment #9)
Indeed ... but AFAICS from dmesg those are disconnected [...]
Yes, there has been a mid-air collision. I was typing: (In reply to Tony Mechelynck from comment #4)
Created attachment 711196 [details] output of the dmesg command
Here, "USB Flash Disk" appears near timestamp [ 3.262267] and "Cruzer Blade" (the other disk) near timestamp [ 3.685860]. They are attached to sdb and sdc at timestamps [ 4.698871] and [ 4.896881] respectively, but they seem to be "killed" shortly after that. I'll now reboot (just in case) and report the result, but ATM I don't have much hope. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

--- Comment #17 from Tony Mechelynck
Something is fishy. Are your disks USB 2.0?
How can I tell? I have used them before, including to run "zypper dup" to install opensUSE 4.2, and also after that. I think that I've used them since the latest kernel online update but I wouldn't (as we say in French) put my hand into the fire about that.
And the log is different from comment#10
Please clarify
See comment #11. These messages happened after the reboot mentioned at the end of that comment. Oh, and (don't know if relevant) after requesting a "restart" in the drop-down at top right of all virtual desktops, there was apparently a hang in the Hewlett-Packard startup screen; Ctr-Alt-Del produced the usual "Executing POST delay", then the messages about which F keys to hit to get to the setup menu or the boot-device menu appeared on that same HP screen, which was finally replaced by the GRUB startup screen (In reply to Oliver Neukum from comment #16)
Yes, the log itself goes to dmesg.
Ah, ok; let's run that again then. Feel free to mark the previous dmesg log as an "obsolete attachment" if appropriate. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

It is possible that your power supply is overwhelmed. Can you confirm the storage devices work separately on the same ports?
They used to work together on what I called slots C and D in comment #21, but I'll try. Stay tuned to this station.
And please provide lsusb -v and lsusb -t for the working state.
