Summary: [improvement] Multiple desktops installation (Software Selection) Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: sfurdal@ehelp.pl QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Community of Practice
Installation step opensuse 11: Software Selection
My proposal: See the screenshot...
I know that we can install any desktop in the "Installation overview" step, but this knows only more advanced users.
I belive that this option should be available in this step and I hope that many people will agree. This option will bring the dimond crown for the opensuse to the multiple desktop distribiutions.

--- Comment #5 from Stefan Hundhammer sh@novell.com 2008-04-28 04:53:28 MST --- The idea behind that desktop selection dialog is to let the user select the _primary_ desktop. That also includes which display manager (KDM vs. GDM vs. XDM vs. none) to use.
Since this dialog is forced upon every user, one of its fundamental requirements is that it needs to be easy to understand. But all those additional elements add to scree clutter:
- What good is the install size at this point? Users who want to know that level of detail can use the software selection, which is a much more appropriate tool for this kind of thing. Plus, users don't even get to know what each number is: The size of that particular desktop on top of the base system, or the desktop plus the base system? What if the user selects multiple desktops? Where would he see the overall size, and where would he see how much disk space remains free? All that makes that information even less useful.
- Radio buttons on the left and _additional_ check boxes on the right make this very confusing. It will take very advanced users to figure out what's happening here. And there might be many surprised users who do it just a little bit wrong and end up with the wrong display manager (the one they don't like).
Coolo, I strongly vote for rejecting this. This is not a good idea IMHO.

I know that we can install any desktop in the "Installation overview" step, but this knows only more advanced users.
The users who know how to use different desktops can safely be regarded as advanced users IMHO. Those users who don't find the software selection or who are too scared to add another desktop there will hardly be the experimenting kind who like to try multiple desktops.

--- Comment #8 from Sebastian Furdal sfurdal@ehelp.pl 2008-05-01 01:26:06 MST --- 1. Summary of the installation is above column "size" 2. You should ask users using pool on opensuse.org or survey
"Do You want have an option "multiple desktops installation"? or and Summary of Size Installation.
and not assume that Your conclusions are correct or not.
Imagine I am an Windows XP user, I do not know that with Linux I can install more than one Desktop. And to have this option would be very helpful to choose my favorite one. Power of GNU/Linux is all about the „Choice” I can have.
