Summary: Intel VGA loads "i915" instead "intel" module Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Milestone 8 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: noelamac@gmail.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: ---
Running from LiveCD, Gnome, 64 bits
"lspci" shows the computer has an Intel 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics Controller card (rev. 02), but "lsmod" says "i915" driver is being used instead the "intel" one, which I think should be the right for this card.
I noted this after trying to activate desktop 3D effects and getting an error message about "desktops effects are not supported on the current hardware".
So some questions arrises:
1/ Why is the "i915" driver loaded instead the "intel" one? 2/ If "i915" is the right one, why is 3D not enabled by default? 3/ How can users enable the 3D feature in a graphical and easy way?

--- Comment #1 from Stefan Dirsch sndirsch@novell.com 2009-10-02 15:03:32 MDT --- You're mixing up kernel and Xserver modules. "i915" is the right kernel module for 965 platform. "intel" is the Xserver module. Please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of glxinfo.

Blacklisted PCIID '8086:2992' found
(Reference: http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/Hardware/Blacklist)
Even current git tree of compiz-manager (0.8.2) still has this specific card black listed. So I'm very reluctant in changing this on openSUSE.
To bypass the blacklist, you can try:
SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz-manager
This should ignore the check and fire up compiz despite the black list. It might or might not work. There is probably a reason why this specific hardware is blacklisted.

Well, here is the requested data:

After running the above command, no effects at all. It seems nothing happens and the screen remains the same :-?

I am attaching a snapshot for the record. Compiz-settings are activated and well, they are -more or less- working. Had to restart X because cpu usage was at 100%.
Anyway, I think the error was clear: the card (vga chipset) is not fully supported by default compiz settings.
