[Bug 798562] New: System does not boot when ldap is specified in /etc/nsswitch.conf for unix groups
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=798562 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=798562#c0 Summary: System does not boot when ldap is specified in /etc/nsswitch.conf for unix groups Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: matthias@aia.rwth-aachen.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:18.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/18.0 I experience the following problem in fresh install of Suse 12.2, which did not occur with an identical configuration in Suse 12.1: We use an ldap server for authentication and autofs entries. When I use the following entries in /etc/nsswitch.conf: passwd: files ldap group: files ldap the system does not boot in approx. 9 out of 10 cases, it just hangs after starting some of all processes. The console login appears, I can enter a username but the system does not start a shell. The only way out of this situation is to do a hardware reset of the system. If the system however boots, no further problem occurs. If I change the above entries in the /etc/nsswitch.conf file to the following: passwd: files ldap group: files no such problem occurs, the system boots. If I change the group antry to group: files ldap no further problem occurs. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. change /etc/nsswitch.conf to contain the entry group files ldap -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is your ldap server local?
The ldap server is on a different host on the same subnet. It is used by a large number of other computers without any problems. Last week I have installed OpenSuse 12.3 on one host. For this host the problem during boot does not occur any more. That means I will sooner or later upgrade all hosts to Suse 12.3 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
