Taking a chance that smartd is the culprit, I disabled it with systemctl, and the system has been running without problems for nearly 24 hours. I also checked Mint by installing their smartmontools package and running "smartctl -d ata -t long /dev/sda". The disk became read-only, so this is not an openSUSE-only issue and I will take it back to Fit-PC support. Let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to try. Otherwise, I'd say it's OK to close this bug. Thanks! David
