Try to use generic renderer:

SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen lowriter

Or also could you guys try to install:

libreoffice-gnome

and then run:

SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk2 lowriter

Report back how the rendering looks under both of those.
