However, even with an X application the font is rendered on the client side - must likely by a toolkit. Thus we also need to know whether this was a Gnome, Plasma, XFCE or whatever else application. The issue should be investigated on a toolkit level - if anything is missing in Xwayland that leads to this the graphics stack team can handle this. There is no use to pick X as the default culprit.
