According to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94403#c2 sleep 5 was tried only on TW host big41 and did not help. Now on TW 20160321 KDE3 host gx780 (the newest/fastest of my testing machines), precedent sleep 2=success (1680x1050@108DPI) for IceWM via scripted 'WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/bin/icewm startx', but neither for KDE3 either via startx nor via 'WINDOWMANAGER=/opt/kde3/bin/startkde startx' (1440x900@96DPI). Precendent 'xrandr > /dev/null' instead of 'sleep 2' =success (1680x1050@108DPI) for IceWM via scripted 'WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/bin/icewm startx', and =success (1680x1050@108DPI) for KDE3 either via startx or via 'WINDOWMANAGER=/opt/kde3/bin/startkde startx'.
