So the command/application that is most likely involved at this point is Emacs. As soon as I switch to the desktop where Emacs is autostarted, as it was running there when I shut down the machine, the CPU load from X goes down to "regular" levels. I will now attempt to confirm this with the instructions provided in comment #5.
