Thorsten just debugged:

utmp entries are not written.

The log files shows
Nov 18 14:16:01 linux-u8d9 su[2386]: pam_wheel(su:auth): who is running me ?!

Running "tty" commands shows /dev/pts/0 but "who" does not list it, so there's
no utmp entry.

Comparing with xterm: There a utmp entry exists for the tty and thus everything
works.
