Same behavior on Leap 15.1 btw, so it's not specific to Tumbleweed.

It starts to work though if you select "Check for dictionary updates" in the
settings menu.
This downloads the dictionaries to ~/.local/share/kiten/, and it can load them
fine afterwards:
Loading edict from  "/home/wolfi/.local/share/kiten/edict" 

Dictionary Loaded :  "edict"
Loading kanjidic from: "/home/wolfi/.local/share/kiten/kanjidic" 

Dictionary Loaded :  "kanjidic"
Dictionaries loaded! 


Maybe the kanjidic file included in the edict package is broken?
