Ok, I've tried this now with Leap 42.1 on a Haswell system - pretty much like yours. I have to say, I cannot reproduce your issue logging in to a Gnome session on a normal user account using lightdm. Steam runs nicely here. Are you sure, you have the latest maintenance updates for Leap 42.1?
