After collecting the requested info in comment 2, I did a poweroff of the laptop. Selected kernel 63 during boot - once desktop was up I started MS Teams and did a test call from within Teams. Headset speakers was working but microphone was not. I then phoned a colleague, again speaker OK, microphone not working. Colleague then phoned me back, again, speaker OK, microphone not working. I then collected the requested files. After having collected the files, colleague phoned me again and the microphone was working. At a subsequent call about 5-7 minutes later to another colleague - the microphone was NOT working again. Resolved by re-plugging USB headset - extra dmesg output is in file dmesg-kernel-63-2.txt. As mentioned - very unpredictable behavior.
