I have done some research in this. kimageformats is not the problem. By default LyX is configured to use ImageMagick for image conversion, also for eps. The problem is that that the default security settings for ImageMagick prohibits converting eps into png (which is configured in LyX). The solution is to remove ImageMagick-config-7-SUSE and install ImageMagick-config-7-upstream. The security settings of upstream ImageMagick are then used, which is less strict than the setting in (open)SUSE. After that the preview of eps in LyX works correctly. This cannot be fixed, because it is configured this way for security reasons. I would be nice if the user can be made aware of this, especially in the case of LyX, where eps is an important format, but I do not see how.
