This is a Lenovo X201 with i915 drm graphics driver. I suspect this should work with all i915 Intel chipsets. Go to Desktop Settings - Desktop behaviour - Desktop effects Set wobbling windows to on (you do not have to apply) and then try the preview. (I tried this also on others with the preview, works, so it should be that function we are talking about - to be clear - the red "filmstrip icon" that is there for some effects). Case one: you do not have debug symbols installed - crashes with a segfault and dr konqui popping up, complaining that the report is not useful due to missing symbols. You install the symbols. Now it just says the report is not useful. Case one: now you have the debug symbols installed. You restart the whole system to be sure it is not something hanging around. Result: as soon as you click the preview icon, the preview crashes now silently, konqui does not pop up any more. But you have no preview. This should apply also for other previews. If you have a Intel core i-5 "ironlake" chipset - works with me 100% always. Special aspects: due to the incompatibility of the mainline kernel of Leap 42.1 with my Intel wireless card I have to use the kernel 4.4 from kernel stable.
