I'm sorry that I can't pinpoint it better. I'm not a developer and I've been
using OpenSUSE for about two months. 

Maybe there are some differences in the packaged elisp files. 

All I can say is that if I remove the mainline version and install the version
from Andreas Schwab's repository, and make no further changes, it works, and if
I go back to the mainline version, it stops working.

Sorry, that should have been 252k and 30.7k.
