Thanks for clarifying the environment.  Although there is nothing preventing
open-vm-tools being installed in a vm in a non-vmware environment, installing
open-vm-tools and running utilities such as vmhgfs-fuse in a KVM environment is
not supported. 

If you wish to use vmhgfs-fuse in a SL Micro vm, the SL Micro vm will have to
be installed in something like VM Workstation Player.
