Instead of running "xsnow" (cpu hog), it is sufficient to run the following

"xclock -analog -update 0.13"

Increasing the update interval to 0.14 and larger, the problem reoccurs.

Interesting: the xclock window doesn't have to be on the laptop's screen, it
can be anywhere and it still helps.
