This seems related / the same as boo#1032151. Given that steam will not run with Mesa gallium based drivers without the openssl fix there seems like no real solution. From what I gather folks running the nvidia proprietary driver do not need the openssl fix and as such feral games may work well with that setup. If someone can confirm and provide a method for detecting nvidia binary driver then the openssl fix can be disabled in that case.
