But since there have been no action at all from upstream so far, I'll be
hesitant to apply the patch in distro.

(we have been bitten badly by patches fixing nvidia blob drivers in the past -
ie it did indeed fix it for blob users, but lead to issues for users of other
gfx).

That said, I just tacked the arch patch on top of the other patch I had in my
branch already, if it applies and builds you can test from the same repo in a
while.
