This was mainly driven by Eric Anholt who is now working for Broadcom. At the time he was proposing this on XDC 2013 in Portland, OR. I believe he was still working for Intel. The big argument at the time was that it gives the open source driver a speed advantage (as function calls between libraries don't require an indirection). This 'megadrivers' project got at least buy-in by AMD - and of course RH was all for it. I do understand your frustration - especially since it countered the hard work you've done to make things more modular. I would like to close this with 'UPSTREAM'.
