I'd already tried to disable wol, ethtool -s eth0 wol d but it had no effect no effect. I'll see what disabling eth does ... Not sure what 'other' hardware you had in mind? Wouldn't the same hardware be active when booting from the LiveKDE dvd, where shutdown works as expected?
