Ok, I just asked because previews in the trash folder could have just caused a
similar problem as you described (with big folders especially).
That's a known problem, and we would actually have a fix for this meanwhile.

Well then, could you please try as normal user?
It would be interesting to know whether it only happens in superuser mode.
