Here is my current workaround for this problem:

In Settings --> Configure Akregator --> Advanced

I am setting: Mark selected article as read after 60 seconds

This gives me 60 seconds to read the article, which is usually enough.  I can
extend that by briefly selecting a different article then switching back to
original article (gives another 60 seconds).  And if I'm done before the 60
seconds, I use CTRL-E to mark that article as read.
