Assuming a) should also run glxgears, not glxinfo:

With modesetting driver 3720 (accel) vs. 1000 (soft)
With intel driver       3266 (accel) vs.  950 (soft)

If I connect via x11vnc, the accelerated performance for both intel and
modesetting goes down to approx 2400.

So it seems it's not the driver performance itself - modesetting is even faster
than intel for this stuff....
