The main thing virtualbox-guest-tools is the helper for mount that handles shared volumes. Is virtualbox-guest-x11 installed? It has the X11 drivers for the guest. Without that package, you will not have resizing, and probably not the shared clipboard. Those functions are also available in the VBoxGuestAdditions .iso.
